The Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA) Secretariat & Health Workforce Department, WHO has advised IFMSA of the opportunity for an internship experience in the Geneva headquarters of the World Health Organization.

The IFMSA has close relations and collaboration with this department. Health workers are the heart and soul of health systems. And yet, the world is faced with a chronic shortage – an estimated 12.9 million health workers are needed to bridge the gap. Momentum on health worker issues is building, as exemplified by the adoption of the Recife Declaration in 2013 and the subsequent 2014 World Health Assembly decision requesting the World Health Organization to develop a Global Strategy on Human Resources for health- http://who.int/workforcealliance/en/

The intern will perform a range of tasks, under the supervision of the communications officer, including but not limited to:

  • Provide assistance in developing communication/ advocacy initiatives for Zero Discrimination Day (March 1) (joint initiative with UNAIDS)
  • Develop and maintain an events calendar for 2016, comprising of key HRH events
  • Assist with arrangements for health workforce events at the World health Assembly;
  • As directed by the communications officer, develop regular written communications material on health workforce issues for the website and social media platforms.

Provide additional assistance to the Communications team as required

The requirements for the intern are:

1. Excellent oral and written skills in English (a necessary requirement)
2. Understanding for health systems and human resources for health
3. Ability to produce results within deadlines and work well under pressure
